Nadeshot Forced to Explain the HBR Meme on the Pokimane Podcast

December 2022 · 2 minute read

The internet never forgets and that means that former CoD pro, Matt ‘Nadeshot’ Haag, is constantly reminded about using the wrong gun at the wrong time.

The 100 Thieves owner was once the most popular player in the pro-CoD scene as captain of OpTic Gaming, and in April 2015 he had the chance to cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats at the annual world championships.

Despite coming in as the favorites his team was eliminated in 7th place after losing to Denial and FaZe Clan, and he retired after the event to pursue content creation.

During that elimination match against FaZe Clan, Nadeshot confused the casters by pulling out the HBR for one life, which at the time was a fairly uncommon weapon.

Nadeshot’s HBR play is one of the most iconic moments in Call of Duty history, for better or worse.

He died fairly quickly after equipping it and switched back to his regular weapon for his next life, but that five seconds was all it took for the internet to decide it was a meme, and it’s followed him around ever since.

Nadeshot touched on the subject during his appearance on the podcast of popular streamer, Pokimane.

After talking for roughly 45 minutes on various subjects, Pokimane harmlessly asked why the chat kept spamming “HBR”. With a look of pain on his face, Nadeshot explained the situation.

“Chat. I don’t understand how this meme makes it throughout different communities. So the HBR. I hate you guys. I thought we had something. I thought we had something going here.

The HBR discussion begins at the 1:45:45 mark below.

“I’ll explain quickly. We’re at the biggest Call of Duty event of the year, it’s called Call of Duty Champs, Call of Duty Championships. We were favorites to win the event, OpTic Gaming, we’d won three events back to back to back in a row prior to this event [sigh]”

After explaining why it was unusual for the HBR to be used, Nadeshot makes light of the situation and laughs that he might use it as his next emote for Twitch.
