Tfue explains why Fortnite's skill-based matchmaking is ruining solos

April 2023 · 2 minute read

Fortnite star Turner ‘Tfue’ Tenney has hit out at the game’s skill-based matchmaking system, claiming that there is no reason to play regular solo matches because of it.

Since Season 10, the v10.40 update to be exact, Fortnite players have been able to experience skill-based matchmaking outside of the arena mode and in regular solo, duos, and squads. In theory, SBMM is supposed to match you up with players of a similar skill – or bots, if you’re just starting out.

However, for one reason or another, players have found that it doesn’t quite work as intended and that if they’re not waiting a long time to get into a game, once they finally make it in, the lobby isn’t exactly full to the brim of players who are on your level. That can, obviously, be pretty infuriating.

Tfue is one of the biggest names in Fortnite.

That was the case for Tfue during his March 5 stream, as he complained about the system after he was eliminated from a match. Prior to being finished, the streaming star was nailed with an incredibly hail of bullets before jumping into a close-quarters fight.

As he had no shields, he was a pretty soft target and was taken down by a player with one pump of their shotgun. That, as some players might expect, set Tfue off. “He one pumped me, sick. I didn’t have any more shield man. What the f**k are these games bro? Skill-based matchmaking is f**king beat,” he called out before ramping his frustrations up a notch.

“Like, who the f**k wants to play this dog s**t? These kids are literally hiding. It’s like what the f**k am I even playing? There’s no reason to even play regular solos anymore. These kids are legit hiding.”

Of course, Tfue isn’t the only Fortnite player in history to experience issues with SBMM, and he certainly won’t be the last either.

Whether or not Epic Games decides to tweak things in the future still remains to be seen but players have been calling for changes for a while and it appears things haven’t gotten all that better.
